2024 Alumni of the Year

Cherokee County boasts not only some of Georgia's finest schools but also a list of remarkable alumni who consistently contribute to their community. Every year, the Cherokee County Educational Foundation (CCEF) honors two alumni for their exceptional service, commitment, and contributions to the Cherokee County School District. For 2024, CCEF is proud to recognize Dr. Susan Padgett-Harrison and Ken White as our distinguished Alumni of the Year!

Dr. Susan Padgett-Harrison

As the Cherokee County 2024 Alumna of the Year, Dr. Susan Padgett-Harrison embodies the highest standards of ethical principles and servant leadership. A Cherokee High School alumna of 1970, Dr. Padgett-Harrison's journey is a testament to resilience, having navigated through ten schools in twelve years due to her father's naval career. Post-graduation, while engaging in various jobs, from working at a local chicken processing plant to serving as a pharmacy tech, it was her role as a class instructor at the Cherokee Adult Training Center that shaped her path. Here, at just 19, she discovered her calling in teaching handicapped adults, who had aged out of public school, which sparked a lifelong commitment to education.

After earning her bachelor's degree in social sciences education from Kennesaw State University in 1983, she returned to Cherokee High School as a social studies teacher. At that time, she earned the James Madison Fellowship from Indiana University as one of the top 20 social studies teachers in America. Dr. Padgett-Harrison's influence extended beyond the classroom as she moved into leadership roles, eventually serving as the principal of Cherokee High School, where she led her students to exceed national SAT scores.

Her expertise in educational leadership led her to the University of Georgia, where she obtained her doctorate, further solidifying her impact on education at both the school district level and as an instructor at Kennesaw State University. Her commitment to community service parallels her educational contributions, with notable positions in the Rotary Club of Canton, the Service League of Cherokee County, and the Cherokee County Board of Education.

In 2018, Dr. Susan Padgett-Harrison was honored with induction into the Bagwell College of Education Hall of Fame at Kennesaw State University.

In 2022, Dr. Susan Padgett-Harrison took on the role of representing District 6 on the Cherokee County Board of Education where she dedicated herself to the task of selecting a new superintendent of schools. Amidst her professional responsibilities, she has never lost sight of her roles as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, or her commitment to her faith community at Heritage Fellowship, where she serves as a deacon.

Dr. Padgett-Harrison's legacy is a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on their community and the generations that follow.

Ken White

Ken White, a revered businessman and Cherokee County native is our 2024 Alumnus of the Year. He exemplifies the spirit of giving back to the community which nurtured his path to success. A graduate of Cherokee High School's class of 1959, Ken's educational journey led him from Reinhardt College to the University of Georgia, laying the groundwork for a distinguished career. His profound connection to his roots is evident in his dedication to Cherokee County and Reinhardt University, where he served on the Board of Trustees for 40 years, many as its chairman.

Ken's generosity has left a lasting imprint on the Reinhardt campus, with his contributions commemorated in several facilities, including the Ken White Atrium and Music Center, and the baseball, softball, and football fields. The courtyard leading to Reinhardt University's Hasty Student Life Center is named after Dr. White for his service and generosity. Beyond Reinhardt, his philanthropy extends to the Cherokee County History Center, where the Ken White Main Hall invites visitors to explore the rich history of Cherokee County.

Despite building a successful career in Dalton as an accountant and entrepreneur, Ken's heart remains in Cherokee County. His establishment of the White Family Foundation in 1992 reflects his commitment to elevating the community through education and support. Ken's journey from a sports-loving student to a visionary leader and philanthropist showcases his dedication to enriching lives and fostering educational opportunities. Let's honor Ken White for his extraordinary contributions and for being our inspirational 2024 Alumnus of the Year.
